A Food Bar Counter That Works as Hard as You Do

When a client came to us planning to open a food bar in a high-footfall commercial space, their brief was clear: build a counter that performs under pressure, looks effortlessly refined, and tells the brand story without a single word. So we got to work — from raw materials to the last strip of LED trim — and delivered a food bar counter that does exactly that. Here’s how the project came together.

Construction

The foundation of this food bar counter is a solid moisture-resistant MDF core, wrapped in premium walnut-grain melamine on the front face and sides. We chose this combination because it balances structural integrity with the warmth of natural wood — without the warping risk of solid timber in high-humidity service environments. The counter perimeter sits on a powder-coated steel plinth base, machined with soft-radius corners so the entire unit flows as one continuous form rather than a series of assembled parts.

On top, the work surface uses a black Marquina marble-effect sintered stone slab — scratch-resistant, heat-tolerant, and non-porous for food safety compliance. A matching display case frame runs along one end, built from brushed brass-finish steel with full-perimeter glass panels. Together, these materials create a counter that handles morning rush and evening service equally well, without showing wear.

Concept

The design concept was straightforward: warmth first, function second — in that order visually, but never at the expense of workflow. We anchored the entire aesthetic around the walnut timber tone, then layered in black stone and brass accents to push it firmly into premium territory. This three-material palette keeps the counter from feeling clinical, which is a common pitfall in commercial food bar design that prioritises hygiene over atmosphere.

Crucially, the back-wall system mirrors this language. Open walnut shelving holds product displays and branded merchandise at eye level, while matte-black cabinet units above store operational stock discreetly. A full-width lightbox menu board runs across the top — white-on-black typography for maximum legibility at a distance. The result is a food bar that reads as a cohesive brand environment, not just a functional counter bolted to a wall.

Layout

Layout planning started with the barista workflow, not the room dimensions. We mapped every action from order entry to drink handoff, then positioned equipment zones accordingly. The POS terminal sits at the far left of the counter — closest to the customer queue entry point — so payment and order confirmation happen before the customer moves along the bar. From there, the prep zone flows naturally to the right, keeping traffic one-directional and reducing mid-service collisions.

The display case anchors the right end of the counter, positioned to intercept customers as they wait for their order. Pastries, grab-and-go snacks, and packaged goods are all visible at standing height without any customer needing to bend or lean. Meanwhile, the rear shelving system is deep enough to stock full-shift supplies, yet open enough to keep product visibility high throughout service. Every element of the layout was tested against a simulated peak-hour scenario before we finalised the build drawings.

Detail

Lighting is what turns a well-built food bar counter into a destination. We specified warm 2700K LED strips recessed beneath the counter lip, casting a soft amber glow across the polished concrete floor below — the same technique used in high-end restaurant bar design. Additional recessed spotlights punctuate the slatted timber ceiling above, directing focused light onto the counter surface and the menu board behind it. At any time of day, the space reads as inviting rather than institutional.

Beyond lighting, the micro-details reinforce quality at every touch point. Drawer handles are recessed rather than protruding, keeping the counter face completely flush. Cable management is fully concealed within the plinth. The display case interior is lined with a mirror panel to multiply product visibility without increasing physical shelf space. None of these choices are visible at first glance — but together, they are exactly what separates a custom-built food bar counter from a generic fit-out, and what customers feel even when they can’t name why.
